Homemade Charoseth (or Fruit Salsa)

“Charoseth” is synonomous with Passover and it symbolizes the mortar used by the Israelites when they were slaves in ancient Egypt. It’s a delicious mixture of apples, nuts and wine. Every recipe is delicious and unique in its own way. Some people grind up all ingredients to really resemble the mortar. In this case – I diced it small for good texture.

Have you ever thought of it as just what it is? A flavorful fruit salsa? Yes! it can be enjoyed at any time of year with some crunchy pita chips, they can be plain – or even dusted with cinnamon sugar. Any crunchy cracker would work as long as it can stand up to this diced fruit mixture.

You can also try a variety of fruits and change up your typical “chip & dip” routine.

CHAROSETH (FRUIT SALSA)

Ingredients

1 cup walnuts (buy them chopped to save some time)
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup kosher red wine
1/4 cup honey
1 tsp lemon or orange zest
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
kosher salt
sesame seeds, optional
2 gala apples, peeled and cubed
1. Toast walnuts in a 350F oven until fragrant. Let cool.
2. Combine raisins and OJ in a small saucepan and simmer over low heat until most of the liquid is absorbed. Next, add wine, honey zest, cinnamon and salt
3. In a large bowl, combine everything together and allow to sit for at least 4 hours before serving.
