I’ve never been big into football, so the Super Bowl wasn’t something that I really cared much for before I met my husband. The way he explains it, it is more an event that America watches as a tradition, even if you’re not really into football. It’s just a chance to get your friends together and have an excuse to eat tasty, greasy food and have a good time!
Okay then! I’m in.
My hubby and his friends have been switching off hosting the Super Bowl with NYE since before I knew him. This year, we host this event – and while I secretly have NO IDEA who is playing (and don’t care) I am looking forward to having friends over and making them some goodies. I like the idea that I can make something kosher in my house to enjoy, other than pizza. So, sticking with “traditional” foods, here is an easy wing recipe that you can just throw in your slow cooker. You can prepare the rest of your appetizers, and clean your house for the big game while they’re cooking!
While these ingredients may seem a bit out of the ordinary or maybe even a long list, you can just throw everything over the wings and forget them for a bit! I also recommend having these ingredients on hand for most of your general cooking anyway! Keep these in your pantry and fridge because they are the type of ingredients that add intricacy to your dish.
Keep in mind that while there is soy sauce in the recipe, and it is salty – soy sauce & salt deliver two distinct flavors. Salt helps to bring out the moisture in an ingredient – thereby bringing out more of the flavors of the chicken and other seasonings, while the soy sauce brings a complexity to the dish, giving a deeper, earthy flavor – referred to as “umami“
Slow Cooker Asian Style Wings
INGREDIENTS
2.5 lbs Chicken wings, no tips.
3 Tbsp garlic, minced ( jar is fine)
3 Tbsp ginger, minced (jar is fine)
1/2 or 1 whole orange, zested ( use a microplane as shown above. If you don’t have one, peel the outer layer of the orange and mince very small)
2 Tbsp dijon mustard
2 Tbsp brown sugar
2 Tbsp jarred sweet & sour sauce (or hot sauce)
1/4 cup lite soy sauce
2 Tbsp chopped scallions
1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame oil
1/4 cup rice vinegar
chili flakes – to taste
kosher salt to season
Sesame seeds, for garnish
Cilantro, for garnish
Orange slices, for garnish – optional
DIRECTIONS
1. Mix all ingredients except (garnish) together. Allow to stand for a few minutes.
2. Meanwhile, season the wings liberally with kosher salt (and pepper if you like)
3. Pour marinade over wings and allow to sit for up to 30 minutes. (you can do this right in your slow cooker’s vessel)
4. Cook on low for approximately 3 – 4 hours, until wings are soft but NOT falling apart. It is normal to see a good amount of fat – it’s simply rendered from the chicken wings and mixed with the glorious marinade. Consider it a flavor bath for the wings; and just use a slotted spoon to serve & garnish!
Enjoy!
